Got Flu?

It seems that this is one of those years for the flu.  One of the premier influenza remedies is Oscillococcinum.  The remedy name was coined by a French physician that saw military duty during the Spanish flu epidemic of 1917.  He noticed a bacterium in the blood that seemed to oscillate.  Oscillococcinum, made from an extract of the Muscovy duck liver and heart at 200C potency, can be helpful.

Skeptic’s claim there is no scientific evidence for this remedy beyond the placebo effect.  They also list homeopathy as a pseudoscience which perhaps make me a pseudopharmacist.  If, in fact, it is only a placebo effect and I get better, then what is wrong with that?  After all, much of the prescription medications actually work via the placebo effect which is measured in pharmaceutical studies.  If you believe something will help and it does, then be happy.  I have used homeopathics on horses and dogs effectively.  Since they do not have expectations that I am aware of then I don’t think an animal benefits from the “placebo effect.”  Also, homeopathics for infants show amazing effectiveness and they have no formed belief system.

Another remedy is a nosode of Influenzium.  A nosode is a remedy made from the discharge of an actual disease.  Nosodes can be used as a treatment for the disease or as a preventative which may be taken monthly.

Vaccination Exemptions

Since the influenza vaccination blog, I have received many comments and requests for additional information about the legal exemption for vaccination.  North Carolina Vaccination Law offers two options:

  1. The medical exemption requires that a physician certifies the vaccination would be “detrimental to a person’s health due to the presence of one of the contraindications” for that vaccination.  An example of a contraindication includes anyone with an allergy to any component of the vaccination including eggs.  Another possibility is anyone that is immunocompromised.
  2. The religeous exemption requires the individual to submit a “written statement of the bona fide religious beliefs and opposition to the immunization requirements, the person may attend the college, university, school or facility without presenting a certificate of immunization.
Just for the record, I am not a biblical scholar.  A common religious or spiritual principle is to keep the body pure.  While few of us will reach a state of perfection, many still strive to take care of their body by making healthful choices.  This includes not consciously taking in toxic material.  Some basic tenants of a religious or spiritual exemption may include:

  1. A religious or spiritual biblical concept that views the body as a temple of God.  (1 Corinthians 3:16-17, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
  2. Blood purity and the warning against the mixing of blood. (Leviticus 17:14)  There are other biblical references to blood.  Many vaccinations are blood products.
  3. There are some that make a case forbidding the combination of genetic material.   Leviticus 19:19 warns against mixing two different seeds in a field.  This practice results in cross-pollination which may alter the viability of the seed.  To maintain the purity of a seed means not mixing foreign RNA or DNA.  Vaccines are or contain foreign RNA or DNA.  This practice theoretically means that the substance can combine with our genetic material, creating a mutation.  This translates into potential cancer or other health issues.
I can only conclude that prepared immunizations do not conform to scriptural rules for hygiene.ealth care decisions on behalf of their children.
The Pastoral Medical Association statement is as follows:
The PMA encourages individuals to seek informed professional advice, considering both the scientific as well as the scriptural in all health matters affecting themselves or their families. We believe and support the God given right of every individual to choose or refuse conventional ideas that conflict with their sincerely held religious beliefs, as so ordained in the Supreme Law of the Creator.

Ham and the Flu Shot

A newlywed was trying to impress her husband with a meal her mother had cooked.  She took a ham, cut the end off, and put the large part in a roaster for the oven.  Her husband asked her why she cut one end off. She replied, “That was how Mom did it.”  Now curious, the young woman asked her mother why she cut the end of the ham off before cooking.  Her mother replied, “That was how my mom did it.”  So the both of them went to Grandma to ask about the ritual.  She replied, “At the time that was what would fit in the small pot I owned.”  Sometimes when you see or hear something long enough it becomes an unquestioned path.

Every year we are inundated with the get your flu shot campaign.  As a pharmacist, it seems blasphemous to even question the current dogma.  Some healthcare professionals may think it irresponsible that I would not support this well entrenched intervention.   As a health care professional it is my job to provide educational material for you to make your own informed decision.  Please consider the following:

  1. When you come in contact with a virus, you may or may not become sick depending on your current state of health.  You can create immunity to that particular virus.  Immunity is a complex individual phenomenon that can last for years.
  2. Vaccination is an attempt to create an immune response in the individual as a prevention of the disease such as influenza.
  3. The flu virus is not a stable virus.  When it infects a person, it uses the cells of the person to replicate or make more viral material.  Your body will develop immunity to that particular virus.  But viruses are ever changing and can even change from one person to another during the flu season.  There are hundreds of possibilities.
  4. You can get the flu shot and get flu like symptoms from that shot and/or still get the flu later.
  5. If we have a naturally mild flu season then you can claim vaccine effectiveness.  If we have a heavy flu season the news will report there was a “mismatch” of the flu vaccine.
  6. Flu vaccination manufacturers by law bear no liability for any harm done by their products.

We have all heard that the flu kills 36,000 people per year.  Of course this number never changes in the media which is evidence of our corporate training.  The American Lung Association, “ Trends in Pneumonia and Influenza Morbidity and Mortality April 2010, page 13, reports influenza statistics from 1979 to 2006.  The total deaths for 2006 were 849.   Perhaps they are adding in pneumonia deaths but it is still inaccurate.  You could also look at the details of influenza deaths by age group, page 20, to see that infants and children do not have a great risk.  The 65 years old and up has the highest risk.

Consider the following information taken from the pharmaceutical manufacturers package insert.  This link has detailed information from manufacturers about influenza vaccinations and others.

  1. Each year, scientist guess which flu virus may occur months ahead of the beginning of the flu season.  They select 3 to 4 viruses to be manufactured into the new flu vaccination.  These are viruses from 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 depending on the product.  Were we not here living and breathing those viruses of the past?  Theoretically this means we could already have that immunity to the viruses of the vaccination.  If the concept of flu vaccination actually worked why would we need a booster every year?
  2. Many of these vaccinations still contain thimerosal (a known neurotoxin that contains mercury) as a preservative.  There are some preservative free products.
  3. Other ingredients may include egg protein, hydrocortisone, antibiotics (neomycin, polymyxin B, kanamycin), formaldehyde, detergents, and polysorbate 80.  We are knowingly injecting toxic drugs and chemicals into your body.
  4. The most troubling “side effects” relate to the nervous system and include Guillain-Barre’ syndrome that translates into hospitalized paralysis and either years of recovery or death.
 Nervous system disorders:
Headache, syncope shortly after vaccination, dizziness, neuralgia, paraesthesia, convulsion, myelitis (including encephalomyelitis and transverse myelitis), neuropathy (including neuritis and brachial plexus neuropathy), paralysis (including Bell’s Palsy and other cranial nerve paralyses), Guillain-BarrĂ© Syndrome  (taken from a package insert).

The British Medical Journal, Public Health: Influenza vaccination: policy versus evidence analysis of studies surrounding influenza vaccinations concluded:

  1. Most studies are of poor quality.  Insufficient data were available in 11 of 17 studies in the elderly.  Resulting studies show no effect to 60 % effectiveness, which are “counterintuitive and implausible.”  “It is impossible for a vaccine that does not prevent influenza to prevent its complications, including admission to hospital.”
  2. The argument that the vaccination of children to minimize transmission to other family members is invalid because of weak methods used in the primary studies.
  3. Little comparative evidence exists on the safety of these vaccines with no long term safety information.

The Lancet reported that “The effect of influenza vaccination on the risk of pneumonia in elderly people during influenza seasons might be less than previously estimated."

Statistics cannot account for the impact to an individual or family that suffers from any disease or treatment of disease.  I am very concerned about the injection of toxic material that causes neurological damage.  There are no long-term studies that measure such effects in children or older adults.  We already have too much neurological disease including Autism, Attention Deficit, and Alzheimer’s.
